An idea into action:

Launch of Jack Iron

In 2010, we launched Jack Iron, a leather-goods brand, in loving memory of the eponymous boat once sailed by Dave's grandfather in Gardiners Bay at the eastern end of Long Island, NY.

While pursuing a dream building wooden boats at The Landing School in Kennebunkport, Maine, Dave became fascinated with nautical hardware. And while working with leather to make oar-locks for one of his boats, he had an idea and designed the first Jack Iron prototype, a tan leather belt strap with a nautical-grade snap shackle as the clasp.

designing & prototyping:

The snap shackle

The snap shackle is the inspiration of Jack Iron. We sought to re-imagine this classic piece of nautical hardware as the centerpiece of our belts and other accessories. We partnered with Acropolis Studios of Rhode Island to realize our vision, engineering a curved thumb release that has been calibrated with just the right amount of spring tension to make it secure but also easy to snap back open with one hand.

strap & assembly

Working with a master craftsman, we developed the first prototype into our signature belt. Getting to that point had been a tour of the East Coast and Heartland of America as we sourced top-grade leather from Pennsylvania, steel rivets from North Carolina, and completed the strap and assembly process in Red Hook, Brooklyn.

completing the journey:

the kickstarter

We spent a few years working on expanding our product set, improving design and fabrication in preparation for general release. In 2016, we launched a Kickstarter to fund our first major production run of Jack Iron leather-goods including belts, wallets, key fobs, and dog leashes, all featuring the snap shackle hardware that inspired the journey.

We launched Jack Iron because we wanted to turn an idea into action, to encourage others to try their hand at something new, and to go through that exploration process of learning and bringing inspiration to fruition.
